Hi, I’m Lisa. My type 2 diabetes diagnosis came in June 2005, and honestly, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember sitting in the doctor’s office, nodding along while my mind raced with questions: What does this mean for my love of sweet treats? Will I ever enjoy comfort food again? How am I supposed to manage this on top of everything else?
At first, I tried to stay positive. But deep down, I was scared. I knew my life was about to change in a big way — and I wasn’t sure I was ready.
I dove into everything they told me: counting carbs, checking my blood sugar, taking meds on schedule. But the reality was hard. I work long 12-hour shifts as a nurse, and trying to balance patient care with managing my own health? Some days, it felt impossible.
Diabetes runs deep in my family — my dad, two uncles, even my younger brother all have it — so I knew what was at stake. I’d seen the complications up close, and that fear stayed with me.
Over the years, I hit more than a few rough patches. I developed neuropathy in my feet, which made standing during long shifts painful. I had a bad infection in my leg that almost landed me in the hospital. There were moments when I felt completely worn down — by the meds, the side effects, and the never-ending pressure to “get it right.”
But I didn’t give up.
Thanks to my family’s support and my faith, I kept going. I started learning what worked for me — and slowly, things got better. My A1C dropped from 11% to 7.2%, and I can honestly say I’m proud of that.
These days, I’m paying it forward. I volunteer at local diabetes workshops, and I share my story whenever I can — because if it helps even one person feel a little less alone, it’s worth it.
If you’re newly diagnosed or feeling overwhelmed, just know: you’re not alone, and it can get better. One step at a time.
